Do you have joint pain? Do your your knees go snap, crackle, pop when you kneel down? Mine used to. What about stiffness in your hips or hands, especially when you get up in the mornings?
I'm not being an alarmist when I tell you that these can be signs of osteoarthritis. The onset of osteoarthritis is caused by cartilage in the affected joints slowly beginning to break down.
About 80% of people over 50 years of age have joint
pain caused by osteoarthritis!
This disease seems to be an inevitable part of
aging.

However, in many cases this degenerative disease can be stopped and even reversed through supplementation.
According to Julian Whitaker, M.D. in his book Dr. Whitaker's Guide to Natural Healing:
"Glucosamine Sulfate appears to be nature's best remedy for osteoarthritis."
So do doctors advise their patients to try Glucosamine? Not hardly. They may tell you that lifestyle changes could help. This includes:
Weight Loss: One study suggested that, for women, weight loss may reduce the risk for osteoarthritis in the knee.
Exercise: Regular exercise may help to strengthen the muscles and potentially stimulate cartilage growth. Avoid high-impact sports. The following types of exercise are recommended: range of motion, strengthening, and aerobic. See our article on The Best Exercise.
Diet: Antioxidant vitamins C and E may provide some protection. Vitamin D and calcium are recommended for strong bones. The recommended daily dose of calcium is 1000-1200 mg. The current guideline for vitamin D is 400 IU per day. Avoid more than 1200 IU of vitamin D per day.
These are excellent recommendations, but most doctors will also direct their patients to take over the counter medications such as Acetaminophen (Tylenol) and nonsteroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) including aspirin, ibuprofen (Motrin or Advil), naproxen (Aleve), and ketoprofen (Orudis).
These medications will alleviate the joint pain. However, in the long run they can actually worsen joint pain by doing nothing to alleviate the underlying cause of the arthritic pain. In addition, if these drugs are used on a continual basis, they can cause negative side effects such as gastrointestinal upset, headaches, dizziness and bleeding in the stomach.
In advanced cases of osteoarthritis, the destroyed cartilage hardens causing bone spurs. What was once only stiffness has become joint pain. Simple movements can become restricted.
So what can you do?
Back to Dr. Whitaker's statement: "Glucosamine Sulfate appears to be nature's best remedy for osteoarthritis."
Remember I said that my knees used to snap, crackle and pop? The joint pain, stiffness and sounds stopped when I started taking Glucosamine.
Glucosamine can be easily found in any drugstore. It is even better when combined with other natural supplements such as Chondroitin and MSM.
MSM contains sulfur, a vital element in the composition of virtually all connective tissue, it is thought to help repair damaged connective tissue (for example, in joints) rather than simply suppressing symptoms associated with joint degeneration.
Chondroitin is thought to promote an increase in the making of the building blocks of cartilage as well as having an anti-inflammatory effect.
Glucosamine may also stimulate production of the building blocks of cartilage as well as being an anti-inflammation agent.
Glucosamine was found to increase blood sugar in animal studies, so people with diabetes should consult their doctor first.
A recent study showed that glucosamine slowed progression of osteoarthritis in the knee.
There have been times when I have forgotten to take any glucosamine supplements for several weeks, but my knees always reminded me!
I can personally testify to the fact that supplementing with Glucosamine has definitely helped to relieve my joint pain!
